Coimbatore: A 27-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday night for buying liquor from a Tasmac outlet with a fake currency note of 500.
The RS Puram police identified the accused as S Aravind, a resident of Sivanandapuram near Saravanampatti in the city. He is employed with a money exchange company at RS Puram.
According to a police officer, Aravind would visit various places a day as part of his job to collect Indian currency notes and exchange them with foreign currencies for a commission.
“After work, he purchased a bottle of liquor from the Tasmac outlet (no 1696) at North Coimbatore on Wednesday night by paying 500. Cashier D Ravikumar, 56, of Veerapandi Pirivu, checked the currency note and found it was a counterfeit note. Immediately, he alerted us,” the officer said.
Preliminary inquiry revealed Aravind had collected more than 1 lakh in Indian currency notes for exchange from Palladam in Tirupur district last week. ‘When he handed over the amount to the exchange firm, a staffer found one of the 500 currency notes was fake. Aravind kept the fake note with him and used it to buy the liquor,” the officer said. He said Aravind had used a fake currency note at the Tasmac outlet earlier also. Aravind was booked under Section 489 (B) of the Indian Penal Code and produced before a judicial magistrate on Thursday morning. Later, he was remanded in judicial custody.
