AHMEDABAD: A total of 16,971 fake currency notes were seized in Gujarat during the last two years.
The cases of fake currency seizures almost doubled in the year 2022 as compared to 2021.
The state home department, in a written reply to the question of Vansda MLA Anantkumar Patel, has stated that during the two last years, 26 cases related to the seizure of fake currency were registered of which nine were in 2021 and 17 cases were in 2022.
The government said that 25 people were arrested and 2,086 fake currency notes were recovered from them in 2021, while 65 people were arrested with 14,165 fake currency notes in 2022.
Five people are yet to be arrested for their involvement in these fake currency seizures.
Officials said that not just the number of cases doubled but even the seizure of fake currency increased by 404% in 2022 as compared to 2021.
The government has not given the denominations of the notes seized in these 17 cases.
