Carroll HS marching band welcomes German foreign exchange student to ensemble

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – A German foreign exchange student joined the Carroll Highs School’s marching band with only a couple weeks practice and performed at the 2024 Super Regional in Lucas Oil Stadium last weekend.

Karoline Fenselau came to Fort Wayne through a student exchange program and had no experience with marching band before.

“I heard of marching band before, but never really knew what it was,” said Fenselau.

Fenselau began as a prop manager for the marching band, but quickly realized that she wanted something more out of the experience.

Over the next couple weeks her friends and fellow band members, made it their mission to turn her into a member of the marching band. One day, she showed up on the field and was ready.

Band Director, Doug Hassell, says competitions matter but moments like this are even more valuable.

“Those are the kind of rewards that you live for, and you never forget. In a word it’s fulfilling, you kind of sit back and smile,” said Hassell

Fenselau caught on quick and is continuing to grow thanks to the help of her bandmates, who have now become her friends.

“It means a lot to me and all these people I met here mean a lot to me and I am going to miss them really much when I am going back to Germany,” says Fesnelau.
